Producing Graphene from Palm Kernel Shell (PKS)
Graphene, a highly versatile material known for its strength, conductivity, and thermal properties, can be sustainably produced from palm kernel shell (PKS) — an abundant by-product of the palm oil industry. This approach transforms agricultural waste into one of the most sought-after advanced materials of the 21st century.
Why PKS?
In Malaysia alone, the palm oil industry generates over 4 million tonnes of palm kernel shell annually. PKS typically contains around 50–60% carbon content — making it an excellent precursor for carbon-based nanomaterials. Utilizing PKS not only reduces agricultural waste but also provides a low-cost and sustainable alternative to conventional graphite sources, supporting circular economy principles.
The Production Process
- Pre-treatment — PKS is cleaned, dried, and crushed into a suitable particle size.
- Carbonization — Heated at 400–800°C in a limited-oxygen environment to produce biochar with high carbon content.
- Activation — Chemical agents such as KOH enhance the porous carbon structure, increasing surface area.
- Graphitization & Exfoliation — High-temperature treatment (>1000°C) transforms activated carbon into graphene sheets through graphitization, followed by chemical or mechanical exfoliation to separate layers.
- Purification — Impurities are removed and the final graphene product is collected as black powder or liquid dispersion.
Applications of PKS-Derived Graphene
- Coatings — Anti-corrosion and protective coatings for industrial equipment.
- Energy storage — Electrode materials for supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries.
- Water purification — Filtration membranes for removal of heavy metals and organic contaminants.
- Sensors — Chemical and gas detection sensors with high sensitivity.
- Composite materials — Reinforcement of polymer matrices for improved mechanical and thermal properties.
