Graphene as a Conductive Additive in Next-Generation Batteries

Technology25 February 2026

The rapid growth of modern technologies such as electric vehicles and renewable energy storage has significantly increased the demand for high-performance batteries. Conventional battery materials still face limitations in conductivity, stability, and rate performance. To overcome these challenges, researchers have turned to advanced carbon materials — particularly graphene — as a promising conductive additive in next-generation batteries.

Why Graphene as a Conductive Additive?

Graphene offers exceptional electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and large surface area. Compared to traditional conductive additives such as carbon black and synthetic graphite, graphene offers a more efficient conductive network, even at lower loading levels. The material creates a "plane-to-point" conductive mechanism, connecting multiple active material particles to form an efficient electron transport network.

Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) in Battery Applications

rGO is derived from graphene oxide through a reduction process that partially restores electrical conductivity while maintaining structural defects that improve interaction with active materials. The presence of oxygen functional groups and controlled morphology in rGO can significantly enhance the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion battery cathodes — improving electron mobility and providing better contact between particles, resulting in higher capacity and improved cycling stability.

High-Rate Capability Enhancement

Incorporating graphene into Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ (LTO) anodes enhances rate performance and cycling stability. The graphene additive improves conductivity and reduces polarization effects, allowing the battery to operate efficiently under high current conditions — making graphene particularly suitable for next-generation batteries used in electric mobility and grid storage systems.

Biomass-Derived Graphene for Batteries

One promising approach involves producing biomass-derived graphene from agricultural waste materials such as Palm Kernel Shell (PKS). This method not only reduces production costs but also supports waste valorization and sustainability goals. In regions like Southeast Asia, where palm oil production is abundant, PKS offers a readily available raw material for graphene synthesis, creating opportunities for local industries to become key players in the global graphene market.

Ecographe for Battery Applications: Our industrial-grade biomass rGO from PKS is available for use as a conductive additive in battery cathodes and anodes. With G/D ratio >1.5 (Raman), carbon purity >99 wt%, and BET surface area 400–700 m²/g, our material delivers consistent electrochemical performance. Request samples and technical data.
